1000 Yard BR - 27th Nov 2011

By PJ

Sunday the 27th of November saw four Murray Bridge Rifle Club members roll up for the last 1,000 yard BR shoot for 2011, they were John Shobbrook, Peter Schenscher, Dave Kosewicz and myself, Paul Janzso.

Bench Rest Target at 1000 yards

We started the morning with a great cooked breakfast by no other than Shobby the Chef. The flags were up from Saturdays Club Shoot, so we just had the safety issues and targets to organize and we were ready to go.

The day's weather looked to be easy on us this time around with a 1 - 2 min left breeze, a little mirage to help with strength and direction.

However, as soon as we were set to go at 9.00am the "Lake Breeze" (from the right) decided to tussle with the gentle left breeze. People that have shot/competed at Monarto will know what I mean. This condition dashed our preconceived thoughts of shooting a screamer group, or for me a sub 10 inch group. But we sure had fun trying anyway.

Peter Schenscher shot his trued Rem 308 with his F Class Standard load.

Dave Kosewicz shot his Tikka 308 with his F Class Standard loads. Dave’s rifle has just been refurbished with an F Class tracker stock and he is very happy with the way it handles and tracks in the bags.

John Shobbrook used 2 rifles:   a Rem actioned 6mm Super LR for 1 round in Light Gun, and a Stolle Dual Port F Class 284 for 1 round in Heavy Gun.

Paul Janzso           HG 10.56 75      HG 16.56 85

I have to inform you all, that I have handed the South Australian section of the 1,000 yard Bench Rest competition over to John Shobbrook as I will be moving from windy South Australia to sunny Central West Queensland to a town called Isisford.

I have accepted a job offer from the Longreach Shire Council as a Ranger for the Isisford Council. So Chris and I will be heading off for the beginning of our “River Change" in mid January, 2012.

Cheers, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.

The man that got 1000 yard BR started in SA - Paul Janzso

On Sunday 12th June 2011 MBRC held it's 5th 1,000 yard Bench Rest Postal Match being also it's 1st anniversary.

The day started out cold, a little frosty and with a south easterly breeze of approx. 4-6 mph. which increased up to approx 10-12 mph

We had the flags and one of the benches already set up from Saturdays 1,000 yard TR and F Class Championship, so it was all hands on deck helping with setting up targets and the second bench.

Shooting commenced at 9.15 am with 9 shooters showing up  for this event. We had 5 Heavy Gun and 4 Light Gun (Standard) shooters , 3 of those were new to the 1,000 yard benchrest comp. Tim Grigg (L), Peter Schenscher (L) and Mark Heyward (H)  welcome guys.

As the morning progressed the conditions, as per MBRC style started changing which opened up the groups a little. I could see this as I opted to do the target duty down the buts after the 1st detail was shot.

Here are the scores:

Round 1

Name Gun Group Score
Paul Janzso Heavy 10.75 75

Trophies
The Australian Smilely (read message from DG below)

The picture shows our club patches and the Jim Clifford trophies.

I hope, i have previously mentioned the "Smiley" patches, which are our version of the American Screamer patches and are awarded to shooters who shoot groups less than 5.5" in HG and 4" in LG.

I hope that sometime soon a Murray Bridge and N-D competitor (competitors) achieves the smiley patches. So far all Australian Smileys have gone to Townsville!!!!

Cheers
Dave Goodridge

1000 Yard BR (No.4)- 6th Feb 2011

RichardB
Richard Braund setting up

On February 6th 2011 the Murray Bridge Rifle Club held their 4th, 1,000 yard Bench Rest Postal shoot, the first for the year.

I would like to welcome Stuart Braund to his first 1,000 yard BR Postal Match. He will certainly be lifting the stakes as he is a tough competitor in F Class. At his first attempt at 1,000 yd BR, his scores and group show that he knows how to stay on target in adverse conditions.

Also Richard Braund and Simon Campanella showed up for a tough shoot.

Travelling along the freeway the weather looked fantastic, sunny, a few clouds and a slight breeze from the right.

By 10.00am, the slight breeze had turned into a 20 knot right hand breeze, gusting an extra 5 - 10 knots and quickly turning from 90 degrees right to 45 degrees and back again.

Richard reported having 6 minutes of right windage and holding out to the edge of the target frame, this has reflected in the groups, or lack of and scores shot for the day.

I had a malfunction with my loads, so I did not manage to fire a shot. That kept me very busy down the butts working the target frames.

Well the scores and groups for the day were...

Round 1

Name Pos Gun Group Score X
Richard Braund 1 Heavy 18.75" 67 0
Simon Camponella 1 Light N/A 5 0
Stuart Braund 2 Heavy N/A 59 0

Round 2

Name Pos Gun Group Score X
Stuart Braund 1 Heavy 14.5" 84 1
Simon Camponella 1 Light N/A 11 0
Richard Braund 2 Heavy 25.5" 73 0

Congratulations go to Richard for keeping his 2 groups on the target and to Stuart for the smallest group for the day. Stuart also shot the highest score with what I think is the first X shot at the Murray Bridge Rifle Club in benchrest. Simon also shot well considering he was using his F Class standard 308 rifle.

I will endeavour to notify all who are interested ASAP for a date for the next 1,000 yard BR Postal Match.

Bryan
Bryan Robertson taking aim

We had 3 shooters show up, Dave Kosewicz, Bryan Robertson, for his first of many, and myself. Dave shot in Light Gun Class, Bryan and myself shot in Heavy Gun Class.

For the first round, the wind measured from the mound, started out 10 kph gusting to 15kph and typical for Monarto,  switching direction from straight down the range to a full right hand (90 degree).

I opted to score, It was great seeing the bullets come through for the sighters, then watching Dave and Bryan both keep their shots on the target for score and group, it was a great buzz,  considering the switching wind conditions. We then changed markers and I shot for a pleasing group and score.

GroupBR

We then had a break for cool drinks and to measure groups, add up the scores and patch out the targets for the second round. Back at the mound for the second round and the wind had built up with conditions changing again. This time there was a left direction thrown in just to make thing a tad more dificult. Dave managed to keep all his shots on the target for a group and score, but Bryan and myself only managed a score, better luck next time.

We also had a non shooting visitor with us, Ville from Finland. Ville took all the briliant pictures for us, thank you Ville. You can tell Ville is from Finland as he took a lot of pics of Dave's rifle (TIKKA T3 SUPER VARMINT) and the Lapua ammo.

1000 Yard BR (No.2)- 12 Sept 2010

It was another windy day that greeted the BR shooters but thankfully not quite as bad as the inaugural 1000 Yard BR start back in July. We had a couple of new (new to 1000Y BR) shooters turn up with Dave Kosevicz and Adam Pohl.

John Shobbrook had a great day with 3 wins from 4 events! Mick Punturiero showed great consistency for 2 second places in Light Gun. Ian Pavy top scored in Heavy Gun but needs to work on reducing his group size.

Biggest disappointment of the day was Dave Kosevicz shooting a 7.75" group in the second relay but having it off target and not counting!

All in all a great day's shooting was enjoyed by all shooters. Special thanks to Paul Janzso who arranged the day's shoot and also managed to pull out a win in Heavy Gun in the first relay!

1000 Yard BR Trial - 11 July 2010

It was a windy and cool day that greeted the eight shooters that attended the first 1000 yard benchrest shoot at Murray Bridge Rifle Club. The wind was gusting 10 - 12mph and fish tailing down the range from 6 o'clock. This would make it difficult for a world record on our first attempt in this discipline (joking). Just how difficult you will see below on the score sheet and group sizes recorded for the day.

Shooters
Ok Paul, what do we do now?

Paul Janzso arranged the inaugural benchrest competition and organised the group to set up the benches and targets by the designated 10.00am start. Special mention for the help of Jasamine Traeger who volunteered to help us on the day.

Thanks to Paul for setting up the opportunity to shoot in a 1000 yard benchrest competition. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this event and how many regular competitors will emerge from this trial run. I enjoyed the event and really found it difficult to shoot without having the target marked and waiting till the targets are pulled to see the result. 1000 yard benchrest is one hell of a challenge and it could be a while yet before a world record emerges from the Monarto range!

Thanks to John Shobbrook for the liquid prizes!
