John E

John E, feeling much safer on the mound than his roof, made his return to shooting.

On Saturday, the 18th of May, the Murray Bridge Rifle Club contested the twenty-first stage of the Club Championship over 600 metres at Monarto.

A steady breeze blew from the right. This breeze changed slightly and was just enough to catch the shooters out.

The only other shooter to score a possible was Greg Traeger with a superb 50.7 in his second round.

Jasamine Traeger was the clear winner in B Grade with 96.5.

Andrew Heard was the best C Grade score with 91.2.

On Saturday the 27th March, the Murray Bridge Rifle Club contested the 19th stage of the Club Championship over 1000 yards at Monarto.

We can only guess what this gathering of great minds have in store for Ian

Several other competitors came close with very good scores recorded in at least one round.

Whittle was the winner in A Grade with 97.8.

Cain was the winner in B grade and top off-rifle for the day with 98.9.

Youngest member, Michael Pavy was the winner in F Class Standard “B” with 111.6, even if he did admit to winding his sight the wrong way a couple of times.

More experienced members welcomed him to the “wrongway club” because most shooters have done it at sometime in their careers.

Ian Pavy was the winner in F Class Open and came out ahead in the family rivalry with 112.6.

Cain and Pavy also added the Handicap wins to their triumphs for the afternoon.
The sighters awards were won by Peter Casley in full-bore with 19.0 and John Cranwell in F Class with 21.0.

700m Championship Report

By "Has Been"

The Murray Bridge Rifle Club fired over 700m on Saturday the 19th of January.

This turned out to be one of the most difficult days shooting seen for some time. The wind varied from very strong to almost nil, changing in a  few seconds.

Scores were low. It appeared as though the more you thought you had the wind setting right, you were wrong most of the time.

Top off the rifle for the day in T/R was B grader Peter Casley with 93.10.

Next best was C grader and new shooter Andrew Heard with 93.2.

The top for A Grade was Gordon Harrison who could manage 90.7.

In F class the story was much the same. Open went to Ian Pavy with 110.3. Ian has been selected in the Australian F Class team which will compete in the World F Class championships in Raton New Mexico in August this year.

The Club congratulates him on this prestigious appointment.

Top for FS was Jim Caspers with 110.3 FS top was Bryan Robertson who scored 106.2.

Andrew Heard took out the Handicap for T/R with 118.2.

F Class handicap went to Peter Byass with 128.5 which included a brilliant 58 in the second round. Pity about the first round Peter.

The magpie awards were won by Mark Whittle in T/R and Colin Kuchel in F Class, who both hit the dreaded 3 ring twice.

Sighters pins were won by: A grade R Paech with 20; B grade P Casley 18; C grade Bob Love 18; FO I Pavy 22.1; FSA T Brown and P Byass both with 22; FSB B Robertson 18. Visitor (former Australian team

300m Championship Report

By 5.56

On Saturday the 8th of December, the Murray Bridge Rifle Club contested the 11th stage of the Club Championship over 300m at Monarto.

The weather was warm with a very strong and gusty wind  from the right.
Throughout the afternoon the breeze cooled and although it gave comfort from the heat it did not make the shooting any easier.TIMB

All good !

With such strong winds the shooters had a lot of difficulty keeping shots within the bullseye area.

One shooter who defied the odds was Greg Traeger who shot a magnificent 100.13. Traeger was the only shooter to score a possible in any section.
The top score by Traeger also saw him win the Handicap award in full-bore for the afternoon.

John Cain was top off-rifle in B Grade with 90.5

Bob Love was the winner in C Grade with 93.3. Love also scored one of the best rounds for the afternoon with 49.3 in his second round.

Jim Caspers was the winner in F Class Standard “A” with 108.3.

Frank Marshall was the winner in F Class Standard “B” with 112.4. This score by Marshall was the best F Class score for the afternoon. Marshall’s score also saw him win the Handicap award in F Class.

John Shobbrook was the winner in F Class Open with 111.7.

The sighters awards were won by Paul Fitzpatrick in full-bore with 19.1 and Shobbrook in F Class with 20.2.

With such strong winds shots surely would appear in the magpie area and there were several contenders for this award.

Mark Whittle was the winner in full-bore with two and Vanessa Tierney also scored two to win the F Class section.

Saturday 17th November 1000 yds Championship Report

On Saturday, November 17th, the Murray Bridge Rifle Club contested the tenth stage of the Club Championship over 1000 yards at Monarto.

The weather was warm with a strong breeze blowing from the right. This breeze changed in strength and direction often. The mirage was very strong and added with the wind and distance caused all shooters problems.

Although conditions seemed to ease, scores were very low. The highlight (though not if they were part of your score) was the number of magpie (3’s).

Only a couple of shooters managed to avoid recording any in their scores. The worse thing was that not only did the shooters score threes but often there were a couple of twos and even ones included.

1000

Shooters on the mound at 1000

Top off-rifle and winner in A Grade was Greg Traeger with 91.7. Traeger recorded the two highest individual scores for full-bore.

The score by Traeger was also enough to win him the Handicap award for the afternoon.

Janelle Traeger was the clear winner in B Grade with 82.4.

Bob Love was the winner in C Grade with 79.3.

John Cranwell was the winner in F Class Standard “A” with 99.3.

Frank Marshall was the winner in F Class Standard “B” with 81.0.

David Keen was the winner in F Class Open with 108.5. Keen’s score included a superb 58.4 in his second round. This score also saw him win the F Class Handicap award.

The sighters’ awards were won by Greg Traeger in full-bore with 19.1, Keith Matthews in F Class Standard with 17.0 and David Keen in F Class Open also with 17.0

As mentioned earlier the magpie award was hotly contested. David McDonald was the winner in full-bore for the second week in a row with five. Marshall although the top scorer in his Grade was the unlucky shooter in F Class and earned the award for this week also scoring five.

Saturday 10th November 400m Championship Report

by Foresight

The range was 400m, the light was good all afternoon, and the air was  as warm, almost hot, as we have had in this shooting year but everyone got caught by the very gentle breeze coming in from the left with very occasional drifts to the right.

The breeze tended to fall away as the afternoon wore on to periods of dead calm as shown by the flags, but the mirage seen through the telescope showed that there was enough movement in the air to require a minor correction to the wind arm on the rear sight to stay in the bullseye ring.

B & Daniel

Brian's explaining and Daniel's taking it all in.

This distance is usually considered one of the easier ones and usually produces a reasonably good number of possibles but not last Saturday at Monarto when 25 shooters, 23 club members and two visitors, could only produce two single possible, one in T/R and the other in F/C.

They were shot by Greg Traeger (who else) in his second round and Jim Caspers in his second round also.

Our visitors were Peter Collins, a regular T/R shooter from way back and David Irvine shooting in F/C style.

Paul

New member Paul and his beautiful stock !

No one reached the handicap limit in either style, 120 in T/R and 140 in F/C.

The top in T/R was Peter Casley and 117.7 and Bryan Robertson 132.9 in F/C.

The off rifle scores for the winners in the two styles were overall Greg Traeger on a count-out on central bullseyes from Rob Paech 97.9 to 97.7 and of course Greg was best in T/R A grade.

B grade went to Peter Casley 96.6 and C grade Paul Fitzpatrick 89.5 while in F/C top in F/S A grade was Jim Caspers115.5, B grade Bryan Robertson 108.3 and F/O David Keen 116.5.

The sniper’s list is as follows, in T/R A grade Rob Paech 18.3 on a count-out with Greg Traeger, B grade a tie between Peter Casley and Janelle Traeger both on 19.0, and in C grade, Bob Love on 19.1 while the F/C results were F/S A Terry Brown 23.1, F/S B Frank Marshal 20.1 on a count out , and F/O John Shobbrook 23.1.

Both Magpie awards were needed as there were recipients in both styles. David McDonald in T/R and Ian Christie in F/C, each managing to score a total on 3 “birdie” 3’s.

800 m Championship Report

By 5.56

On Saturday the 13th of October, the Murray Bridge Rifle Club contested the eighth stage of the Club Championship over 800m at Monarto.

The weather was warm with a light breeze that changed direction continuously throughout the afternoon. What caused the most problems for the shooters was the changing strength of the mirage which also changed from side to side.

No possibles were scored in any of the grades.

Top off-rifle and clear winner in A Grade was Greg Traeger with a pair of 49’s, for 98.6.

Bob Love continued his winning way in C Grade with 82.4 which did not quite beat his age.
Terry Brown was the winner in F Class Standard “A” with 109.2, narrowly beating several competitors a further point behind.

The outstanding shoot for the afternoon was by Frank Marshall who won F Class Standard “B” and beat all other competitors with 111.6.

Iain Christie with his New Savage

Numbers were down due to the fact that several shooters were resting after the State Championships and national Teams events over the last two weeks.

Terry Brown was the winner in F Class Standard “A” with 115.5 just ahead of Jim Caspers with 115.4.

Scores in F Class were high but only one perfect score of 60 was achieved by Colin Kuchel (60.4) in his second round.

600 m Championship Report

by Foresight

Twenty two of us, twenty members and two visitors, had an interesting time last Saturday 20th of September, trying to beat a very variable wind from the left over 600m.

The afternoon started in full, bright sunlight which lasted for about half the shoot before the sky clouded over and looked as though we would be flooded out.

The threatening rain didn’t eventuate but the target picture through the sights was fairly dull.

Pcarter

Peter Carter in action on the Deed Rifle Range

The temperature was pleasantly warm but the main problem was  a  very rapidly changing set of conditions in both speed and direction all afternoon.

No two flags down both sides of the range were telling the same story.

The direction was swinging from nine ‘o’clock to nearly a rear fish-tail in random fashion while at the same time some flags were briefly almost hanging down the pole while others were standing almost parallel to the  ground.

As a result, scores were only generally fair with only two possibles recorded, both in T/R and in the shooters second rounds.

The two recipients  were Mark Whittle and Rob Paech while the highest O/R scores in F/C was a pair of 58’s shot one each by John Cranwell and Terry Brown.

Only one person made the handicap in either style and that was one of our recent new members, Andrew Heard, who shoots T/R style.

Top off rifle overall and also best in A Grade in T/R was Mark Whittle with 98.9 while best in F/C was a tie between Terry Brown in F/S A and Ian Pavy F/O both with 113.6 and Peter Schenscher F/S B took that style B  grade honours.

The other top place getters in T/R were B grade Jazz Traeger and Andrew Heard in C.

The snipers for the day were T/R A grade Greg Traeger 19.2, B grade Tim Benger 18.0 and C grade Bob Love 15.1, and in F/C, F/S A Terry Brown 22.1, FS B, Bryan  Robertson 20.0 and F/O Ian Pavy 20.0.

Two shooters, one in each style, John Cain in T/R and Frank Marshall in F/C, had to add their names to the respective Magpie Awards with one “magpie 3” each.
Scores in handicap order were:

T/R A. Heard 45.1, 47.2, 92.3, 95 (29.5) 120, 84.7% used; M. Whittle 48.4, 50.5, 98.9, 107 (10.7) 117.7; Jazz Traeger 49.2, 48.4, 97.6, 103 (13.2) 116.2; R. Our range will be closed next weekend as it will be the State Championships i.e.the Queens Open Prize meeting, at the state range at  Lower Light, lasting for five days ending on Monday, the holiday.

We wish all those competing the very best of good shooting.
